Kimmswick, located 25 miles south of St. Louis, was founded by Theodore Kimm in 1859. By 1876, it was the second largest town in size in Jefferson County, with saloons, hotels, mercantile stores, a drug store, doctors, schools, and more. However, as the automobile became the preferred mode of transportation and new highways were built, the small town was almost forgotten. In 1970, Lucianna Gladney-Ross began a project to restore the historic town, and now it is once again bustling with unique shops and charming restaurants, many of which are located in historic homes and buildings dating back to the mid-1800s.
The town is also home to several annual festivals, including the Strawberry Festival, the Kimmswick Bluegrass Festival, and the famous Apple Butter Festival, in addition to several attractions such as the Anheuser Museum and Estate.
