MEET OUR CREW: Deckhand Tremmel Wilson is always smiling on the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch
Tremmel Wilson is a deckhand at the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch and his smile is often the first thing people see before boarding a cruise on the Mississippi River. He’s been working at the Riverboats for four years now and has big plans for his future with us!
Q: Why did you apply to work at the Riverboat at the Gateway Arch?
A: I thought it would be a good experience to meet new people, try new things and learn more about the Mississippi River. And I’ve learned a lot about the St. Louis Riverfront too.
Q: What does it mean to represent something as unique as the Riverboats?
A: I’m so honored to be able to represent the Riverboats and St. Louis itself. It’s a pleasure and an honor to work down here and be the face of a company. People look up to you, ask you questions and feel safe in yours arms, so it’s a great experience.
Q: What would you say to convince a friend to come work with you at the Riverboats?
A: There are so many good things to say. Why would you not want to work down at the Riverfront, let’s start there. But I would say it’s a great experience, you get to learn new things, work on the water and just having that on your resume that you worked on the Riverfront is a good thing. You can start as a Server and work your way up to Cruise Coordinator, or you can start as a Deckhand and work up to First Mate or Captain. That can take you far and away. I want to work my way up to be a Captain one day, I want you coming down one day and see Tremmel Wilson as a Captain.
Q: Tell me something that makes you smile when you’re at work.
A: Every day I come down here with a smile on my face because I never know what I’m going to get or what I’m going to see. When I see the little kids coming off the boat and they want to shake my hand and stuff. Sometimes they even ask me for an autograph. A family came and asked me for an autograph and I felt honored like I was a celebrity or something. It was great. Just making someone else’s day makes me smile.
Q: What’s something about your job you like to brag about?
A: I brag about how I get to ride the cruises for free. I don’t have to pay to ride and get the experience that I do. The Groove and Spin Cruise is like a party. Everyone is just dancing and having a good time. That’s my favorite cruise. The Blues Cruise and Diva Cruise, just seeing these moments of people laughing and dancing is just awesome. You know those party busses, they don’t have nothing on the Riverboat parties.
