National Park Service Hosts Gateway to the Stars
Stargazing Series under the Gateway Arch
WHAT: National Park Service, in partnership with the St. Louis Astronomical Society, hosts Gateway to the Stars, a free educational stargazing series under the Gateway Arch. NPS invites visitors to unleash their inner Galileo as they take in the incredible night sky views and learn about astronomy and its impact on cultures and events. The series features:
Ghosts of the Arch Grounds: Friday, May 9; 8 pm
Meet at the north leg of the Arch for a twilight walking tour of the Arch grounds that visits the various incarnations of buildings, people and boats that once occupied the historic area where the Arch stands today. Stargazing led by the St. Louis Astronomical Society to follow the twilight tour, pending clear skies.
Cahokia Mounds: America’s First City: Friday, June 13; 7:30 pm
Meet in the Odyssey Theater inside the Arch Visitor Center to hear Bill Iseminger, assistant manager at Cahokia Mounds Historic Site, discuss the astronomy and culture of the Cahokia people, and sign copies of his book “Cahokia Mounds: America’s First City.” Pending clear skies, telescope viewing led by the St. Louis Astronomical Society on the Arch grounds will follow. Attendees will be able to view the full moon, Mars and Saturn.
